Propose a Colour
Two things are worth sending: a colour that is genuinely missing, and something that is wrong.
Propose a colour
Rarer than it sounds. The library is built to a spacing band: no two colours closer than 1.5 ΔE00, none further than 4.0 from its nearest neighbour. A missing colour has to fall in a gap, and few gaps are left.
Check first. Paste your Lab values into the LAB tab of the browser. Within 1.5 and the colour is already there under another code; beyond 4.0 and you have found a real hole.
What a proposal needs
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| A physical sample, measured | Not a Lab value from a screen or a conversion. The library is spectral and a new entry has to be too. |
| X-Rite i1Pro 3, 380–730 nm at 10 nm, M0, M1 and M2 | Mixing instruments inside a library breaks the comparisons the library exists to support. |
| An unprinted piece of the substrate | So the paper’s own brightener content can be measured — see Optical Brighteners. |
| Its distance to the nearest existing colours | In the expected band, or there is nothing to add. |
Accepted colours are added in periodic updates. The code is derived from the measurement, never assigned by hand, and once published it is frozen like every other — see Versions and Changes.
Report something wrong
A colour whose Lab does not match its own spectrum, a figure on these pages that does not recompute, a Range percentage that disagrees with your own profile. Corrections are published with the reason and the date. What is already known is on Known issues — worth a glance first.
Write to info@chromaspot.org (Contact): the code, what you propose, and why.
